HSN Code Finder

Find HSN classifications for products and understand the applicable tax information.

Data Source Notice

No live authoritative HSN/GST provider is connected yet. Results shown are a small demonstration dataset for interface validation only and must not be used for official tax classification. Verify every HSN code and GST rate with the GST portal or your tax advisor.

Start Your Search

Enter a product name or HSN code above to explore classifications and applicable GST rates.

How It Works

Step 01

Describe the product

Search by keyword — what the item is, what it is made of, or what it is used for.

Step 02

Or search by code

If you already have a code, enter it to see the description and context attached to it.

Step 03

Review the match

Check that the description genuinely fits your product, not just a similar-sounding one.

Step 04

Confirm before filing

Validate the classification and the applicable rate against the official tariff or with your tax advisor.

Key Benefits & Use Cases

Faster invoice preparation

Find a candidate code while you are drafting an invoice instead of pausing to dig through a tariff schedule.

Consistent classification

Using the same code for the same product across invoices reduces mismatch queries later.

Better supplier conversations

When a supplier's code differs from yours, having the descriptions side by side makes the discussion concrete.

Smoother documentation

Correct codes on commercial documents keep customs and tax paperwork moving without avoidable clarifications.

What is an HSN Code?

The Harmonised System of Nomenclature is an internationally standardised classification for traded goods, maintained by the World Customs Organization and adopted by most trading nations. Each code corresponds to a defined category of goods.

In India, HSN codes are used in GST reporting and invoicing as well as in customs documentation, so the same classification carries through from a purchase order to a shipping bill to a tax return.

How HSN Codes Are Structured

The code is hierarchical, and each pair of digits narrows the category:

  • First two digits: the chapter, a broad family of goods
  • Next two digits: the heading within that chapter
  • Next two digits: the subheading, giving the six-digit internationally common code
  • Further digits: national extensions used for tariff and statistical detail

How Businesses Use HSN Codes

Codes appear on tax invoices, in GST returns, on export and import declarations, and in product master data. The number of digits you must report can depend on turnover and on whether the supply is domestic or an export.

Because the code drives both the tax rate and the customs treatment, product master data is worth getting right once rather than correcting invoice by invoice.

HSN Code vs SAC Code

HSN classifies goods. SAC — the Services Accounting Code — classifies services. A business supplying both will use HSN codes on its goods lines and SAC codes on its service lines, sometimes on the same invoice.

Confusing the two is a common filing error, particularly for businesses that bundle installation or support with a physical product.

Why Correct Classification Matters

The code determines the tax rate applied and the duty treatment at the border. Misclassification can mean underpaid or overpaid tax, held shipments, retrospective demands and penalties.

Where a product could plausibly sit in more than one heading, document the reasoning behind your choice. If the position is ever questioned, a contemporaneous rationale is far stronger than a reconstruction.
